I love the idea that Cage found a way to turn noise into something that can be distracting into a way of peace along with finding it interesting. I love this because my soundscape was supposed to be calming and interesting instead of an annoyance or distraction. This was a happy surprise to me since my soundscape was something I decided upon before I even read this article and we happen to be reading this article during the same project. There’s something satisfying about having an overall “theme” to a project.
Cage’s idea of “There’s no such thing as silence” is so intriguing to me. It’s a really interesting idea of looking into the noises that go on all around us every second of the day. The way I personally interpret his quote is that the “white noise” that most people hear, isn’t white noise to him. Every key tap, every blow of the wind, and the footsteps of people going along their paths is all meaningful to Cage. This is a really special way of looking at things in my opinion because everything is meaningful to someone or something. It’s a reminder that just because we don’t care about an ordinary object or random sounds, that doesn’t mean those things are just meaningless. There’s just a way this makes me feel that's hard to explain, but just the reminder of the simple things in life is enough to put a smile on my face. I really loved this article and its outlook on life.
